ABOUT THOMAS FARMS ::
In the heart of Ozark Mountain Country, North Central Arkansas is home to Thomas Cattle Farms.
We moved to these mountains in 1973 looking for a country way of life. And found it to be a good place to raise our family. Good neighbors, good weather, peace and quiet and good hard working independent country folks.
The area is dotted with cattle ranches, small farms and businesses. Good pasture land, hardwood and pine timber and beautiful vistas. Wildlife abounds. Deer, turkey, migratory birds, even bear, coyotes that communicate at night with each other in the hollows and on the ridges and rare mountain lions that mostly stay out of sight. Some of our property is land homesteaded in the early 1900’s. One parcel has a deed signed by Teddy Roosevelt.
In 1982 we purchased our first Limousin bull and a dozen cross bred females. There were just a small handful of Limousin breeders in Arkansas then. Our daughter Amy purchased a few Limousin calves and showed them at the county level then on to the Arkansas State Fair competition. She did well in the junior competition, winning grand champion at state and the purple circle for junior showmanship. We were Arisan Limousin back then but changed for simplicity to Thomas Farms.
The opportunity to start our forestry business came about around that same time. We developed the idea for mobile forestry crews. Contracting in Arkansas and all the southern states. Our crews plant trees, thin trees, develop wildlife habitat and maintain rights of way.
Polled Fullblood Limousin became available and in 1994 we purchased MH Southern Cross 548D when he was just a week old. He was a great addition to the Limousin breed and was polled. He was well made, thick, gentle and sired great mama cows. His semen was shipped all over the U.S. and even out of the country. Today we still raise a good herd of fullbloods nearly all polled now many Homozygous for the polled trait. Maintaining the thickness that brought Limousin to this country has always been a very important objective.
Thomas Cattle Farms added Black Polled Purebred Limousin cattle. The objectives are the same for the black herd. Thick made, good natured, good mamas, bulls that meet the needs of the customer.
Lim-Flex have also been added to satisfy our customers. A.I. has been a great tool to bring in some of the best Limousin genetics.
Amy and husband Devin have blessed us with six grandchildren. Amy and Devin are raising their kids to understand country life and the value of opportunity and hard work in the American tradition.
In 2012 we will present our 12th Limousin Production Sale. From the start of our first Fullblood Limousin offering to now presenting Blacks, Reds, Fullblood and Lim-Flex breedings in our production sale. Our objectives remain to breed and raise Limousin seed stock that meets today’s cattle ranchers needs.
